If you’ve ever experienced bankruptcy, you know that dealing with your credit score and credit history can be stressful, if not downright confusing. Many people are understandably worried that filing for bankruptcy will have a permanent negative impact on their credit report and score. But will it? And how long will that negative impact last?

Michael Sandler of the bankruptcy law firm Fisher-Sandler answers this question in the video above.

Hi, this is Michael Sandler with Fisher-Sandler answering your quick questions with my quick answers. so a lot of people want to know how long bankruptcy stays on your credit report.

Chapter 7, Chapter 11, and chapter 13 or any type of bankruptcy is going to stay on your credit report for 10 years.  10 years, that’s a long time. Most people think it’s 7 years and that’s because they confuse bankruptcy being on your credit with negative items in general being on your credit.

Negative items in general such as charged-off accounts or late payments will stay on your credit for seven years. However, a bankruptcy stays on your credit for 10 years. Now it doesn’t take 10 years to recover good credit.

After you file bankruptcy usually it takes about a year or two to build your credit back up. Bankruptcy gets rid of all those bad things in your credit report. So it actually has the net effect of raising your credit in the short term.

Filing for Chapter 7 or Chapter 13 bankruptcy can be a good solution for people who are overwhelmed by their debts. However, the impact of those actions can last for years. You can file for bankruptcy to help relieve you of your debt, but you will still need to make sure that you take the steps needed to protect your credit.

One of the most important things you can do after you file for bankruptcy is to check your credit report for errors. Errors on your credit report can stay there for up to seven years, so it’s important to check your credit report after you file for bankruptcy. Repairing your credit after bankruptcy can take years, but it is possible.
